We came from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas and surrounding areas beginning in the 1930s, drawn to the Central Valley because of its rich agriculture. We settled in local labor camps and worked for many years in the area’s orchards and fields.
In time, we left the camps. We purchased land in Corcoran, Avenal, Stratford and the Island District of Lemoore. We bought homes in Hanford. We raised families, started businesses and made important contributions to our communities in myriad areas—from local government and law enforcement to education and sports.
Through this exhibition, you will learn about our lives in the labor camps and the central roles our churches and organizations have played. You will also meet the men and women whose talent, hard work and leadership have made a positive difference in our cities and towns.
