Prettiest Painted Places

Hanford has won the national award for being one of five Prettiest Painted Places in America. Former Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Wilda Parks, who entered the city in the contest, made the announcement. The Rohm and Haas Paint Quality Institute of Philadelphia had selected Hanford as regional winner out of 300 entries from six regions. "We were picked not only on our public buildings, but also on the dedication and commitment to the community," said Parks.

Judges included representatives from Better Homes and Gardens and archetecture magazines. Parks said that they plan to feature the final winner in their future magazines and journals. Sunset, Country Living and other magazines plan to feature the winner.

John Stauffer, Director for PQI, said Hanford was a strong contender from the beginning and that, "Judging from the nomination forms and photos we've seen, the residents of Hanford can be proud of the appearance of their community." Criterion for selection was for condition of paint or stain in the community, outstanding architectural features and overall effect of color scheme.

The Civic Auditorium, Fox Theater, Carousel, Veterans Memorial Building and the old Post Office, among many others, impressed John Evans, the judge who visited Hanford. He also admired some unique homes. He said that Hanford "exemplified what the national competition was all about," and that "the care and concern of officials and residents were evident."

Mayor Sylvia Gaston said that the community could be proud. "I think that the fact that we won this award is not accidental; businesspeople like Gordon Blue and Dan Humanson improved what they had." Neighborhood businesses followed suit and the city has become an attractive place deserving awards. Gaston said that the city will continue to maintain sound infrastructure to encourage investments.

"Folks already come to Hanford to see the historic renovation of the central business district and residential areas," Parks said, "and this is sure to bring more." Ralph Tucci, Coordinator of the Hanford Visitors Agency, agreed with Parks that the win will have a positive impact on the number of visitors to the city. He pointed out that it will open new avenues for marketing.
